Commercial air travel restored in Brazil’s sixth largest city using military base

-

On the morning of this Monday, May 27, at 08:04, the first commercial passenger flight in the special operation as an alternative to Salgado Filho Airport landed at Canoas Air Base (BACO) in Canoas (RS), in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre.

The video images below show the Airbus A320neo with registration PR-XBI, from LATAM, landing, arriving at the ramp, and disembarking passengers. There were 173 travelers, according to the airline:

The flight seen in the scenes above was LA-9210, which took off at 06:40 from Congonhas Airport in São Paulo (SP). The return flight is scheduled to depart at 09:20 in the morning but could be delayed as it is the first commercial passenger operation at BACO (Update: the departure occurred at 10:00).

As AEROIN reported in recent weeks, the Air Base does not have a terminal for passenger boarding and disembarking, so a structure was set up at ParkShopping Canoas, which is about 3 km from the airport, and travelers will be transported by bus between the shopping center and BACO.

The concessionaire of Salgado Filho Airport, Fraport Brasil – Porto Alegre, is responsible for managing operations at ParkShopping Canoas. At the moment, it is not determined how long it will take until the international airport of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul can receive flights again.

This Monday, there are two more operations scheduled in Canoas, according to the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) system.

One of them is the G3-9090 flight from GOL Linhas Aéreas, which was supposed to depart from São Paulo International Airport in Guarulhos (SP) at 06:15 but had not yet taken off at the time of this publication.

The other is another LATAM flight, LA-9212, which will depart from Guarulhos at 12:00, landing in Canoas at 13:45 and taking off at 15:15 to return to the same São Paulo airport.
