The arrival of commercial airlines at the Chichén Itzá Airport will further boost the economy and tourism in the region. Recently, Aerus launched its new route connecting Chichén Itzá with Cozumel.
The new Chichén Itzá Airport (CZA/MMCT) is located in Kaua, a town near the ancient Mayan ruins. The new terminal replaced the old airstrip, which was situated just a few meters from the pyramids.
Chichén Itzá is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Yucatán, unfortunately lacking air connectivity. The small town boasts various tourist attractions including archaeological ruins and ancient cenotes.
The project manager of the Chichen Itzá Airport, José Miguel García Vales, stated: “The airport has all the conditions to receive international airlines and other types of air transport, as well as various tourist services.”
The airport’s management views Aerus’s arrival, along with other companies, optimistically, reflecting the growing tourist demand in the region.
To meet this demand, the airport’s management has devised a business plan focused on passenger transportation. Additionally, they plan to establish an air cargo logistics center and aircraft maintenance workshops.
On July 1st, Aerus will inaugurate its new route between Cozumel and Chichén Itzá, offering a daily flight operated with Cessna C208 Caravan aircraft.
Aerus aims to connect the Yucatán Peninsula with up to 116 weekly flights using Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft with capacities ranging from 9 to 12 seats, providing approximately over a thousand weekly seats.
