New York’s three major airports handled 144 million passengers in 2023

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey recorded in 2023 that the agency’s three major airports gained their highest level of passenger traffic ever. Totals exceeded pre-pandemic levels as passengers took advantage of additional capacity at new facilities.

In 2023, a total of 144 million passengers moved through John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty airports, according to initial estimates. The total exceeded the previous record of 140 million passengers set in 2019 by 3%.

In recent years, the agency’s airports opened new facilities such as Terminal A at Newark Liberty, which in its first year of operation moved 15 million passengers, and Terminals B and C at LaGuardia, in addition to other road rehabilitation and redevelopment work.

«We are driving the $30 billion investment in redevelopment work at our airports, and the results are in: a record 144 million passengers by 2023,» said Kevin O’Toole, chairman of the Port Authority.

«As passengers continue to return to our airports, many for the first time in years, we are thrilled to welcome them with a completely transformed experience from curbside to gate,» said Rick Cotton, Port Authority Executive Director.

Newark, LaGuardia and JFK set new records for domestic travel in 2023, moving 35.3 million, 30.6 million and 29.1 million domestic passengers, respectively.
