airBaltic will build a cargo hub at Riga International Airport

Latvia’s national airline, airBaltic, is set to build the «Baltic Cargo Hub» at the Riga International Airport, aiming to streamline import, export, and cargo handling processes.

The Baltic Cargo Hub will be equipped with state-of-the-art semi-automated cargo handling equipment, including a mail sorter. Special cargo handling capabilities will include temperature-controlled rooms for pharmaceuticals and perishable goods, as well as facilities for hazardous goods, live animals, and valuable shipments. The hub’s design will also integrate a customs checkpoint.

In this regard, Kaspars Briškens, the Minister of Transport of the Republic of Latvia, stated, «The Baltic Cargo Hub marks a milestone for Latvia. This facility not only exemplifies our commitment to enhancing Latvia’s logistical capabilities but also reinforces our strategic vision of using aviation as a catalyst for economic growth and international trade.»

Furthermore, Martin Gauss, President and CEO of airBaltic, added to this. «In 2023, airBaltic transported over 9,400 tons of cargo and mail, maintaining its position as the largest carrier at Riga Airport. However, our existing cargo hangar, crucial to our operations, will soon be replaced by the Rail Baltica railway. The Baltic Cargo Hub will significantly increase our capacity, allowing us to handle up to 45,000 tons of cargo annually», he said.

Finally, Laila Odiņa, President of the Riga Airport Council, stated, «Our national airline, airBaltic, is currently the largest carrier of air cargo and mail in Riga, and we are confident that the new hub will optimize and improve cargo service processes, providing additional benefits to both the airline and its customers.»

The hub will dedicate approximately 5,000 m² to cargo handling facilities and around 2,000 m² to office spaces. Its total area will be 6,895 m².
