On Wednesday, February 21, we boarded flight AV8432, from El Dorado Airport in Bogotá to José María Córdova International Airport in Medellín.
The Airbus A320 took us to Avianca’s Aeronautical Maintenance Center (MRO), where we were greeted by Fabián González, Manager of WB Fleet & Shops CRS Line Maintenance who would be our host during the tour.
Important Facts about the Aeronautical Maintenance Center (MRO):
Size and Capacity:
- With 875 employees, including 680 technicians and engineers, the MRO stands as one of the largest and most complete in the region.
- Its facilities, spanning over 44,000 square meters, include a hangar of 8,400 square meters, capable of servicing up to 7 aircraft in major service simultaneously and a total of 11 aircraft under maintenance.
Sustainability and LEED Certification:
- The MRO has been recognized for its commitment to sustainability, earning the prestigious LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification.
- Initiatives such as the rainwater collection and supply system, the management of recyclable materials, and the implementation of solar panels are just some of the sustainable practices highlighted at this center.
- Additionally, the use of electric bicycles for staff is promoted, and natural lighting is maximized to save electrical energy.
Airbus A320 Fleet Reconfiguration:
- The MRO team has successfully carried out the reconfiguration project for the Airbus A320 aircraft, increasing their capacity by 20% through the introduction of three classes of seats: Premium, Plus, and Economy.
- More than 14,000 miles on over 100 Airbus A320 aircraft have been modified to cover short and medium-haul routes.
- Started in October 2021 and concluded in 2023, this project leaves 16 aircraft ready for reconfiguration in 2024.
