Ryanair to invest 5 billion euros in Spain within the next seven years

At a meeting held at the Moncloa Palace this January 12, the President of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and the CEO of Ryanair, Michael O’Leary, disclosed investment plans of 5 billion euros by the Irish airline in the Iberian country over the next seven years.

The investment aims to stimulate the Spanish economy, improve regional and international connectivity, and strengthen the booming tourism sector, which recorded record figures at the end of 2023.

Ryanair’s investment plan in Spain includes increasing the number of passengers from the current 55 million to 77 million, expanding the number of routes from 730 to over a thousand by 2030, basing 33 new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and establishing five new operational bases.

Ryanair Today in Spain

Ryanair operates in 26 airports in Spain, which includes: Alicante (ALC), Almería (LEI), Asturias (OVD), Barcelona (BCN), Castellón (CDT), Fuerteventura (FUE), Girona (GRO), Ibiza (IBZ), Jerez de la Frontera (XRY), Lanzarote (ACE), Madrid (MAD), Málaga (AGP), Menorca (MAH), Murcia (RMU), Palma de Mallorca (PMI), Santander (SDR), Santiago de Compostela (SCQ), Seville (SVQ), Reus (REU), Tenerife/North (TFN), Tenerife/South (TFS), Valencia (VLC), Valladolid (VLL), Vigo (VGO), Vitoria (VIT) and Zaragoza (ZAZ).

It employs approximately 6,500 people in Spain and, according to AENA, is the leading airline in terms of passenger volume. The low-cost carrier operates more than 700 routes to 29 countries from Spain, including 82 domestic routes.

According to the Cirium platform, for the upcoming summer season, the company will have an offer of 40 million available seats in Spain. Palma de Mallorca is its main base, capturing a 16.5% monthly share of seats, followed by Málaga and Barcelona with 12.5% and 11.9%, respectively.
