Lufthansa to fly to Moldova

Lufthansa will start flights to the Republic of Moldova this Summer season, with direct flight connecting its hub in Frankfurt to the country’s capital and main airport in Chişinău. The information was announced by Moldova’s Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Andrei Spînu, and confirmed by Romanian aviation website BoardingPass.ro.

The flights are to be operated four times weekly from April 29, from Mondays to Thursdays, using the airline’s Airbus A319. From May 23, a frequency on Fridays will be added. Tickets are already available on Lufthansa’s sales channels.

Lufthansa’s new route will see competition from Moldovan low-cost carrier (LCC) HiSky, which connects both cities three times a week. This connection has recently been operated by the Airbus A321neo from Romanian-registered HiSky Europe.

Chişinău is already served by Lufthansa Group through its subsidiary Austrian Airlines. The airline flies between its hub in Vienna to the Moldovan capital daily. According to schedules data on Cirium’s Diio Mi application, this month the route is served four times weekly with the Airbus A320 and three with the Embraer 195. By July, service grows to six weekly with the A320 and seven with the E195.

Both routes offer connecting possibilities elsewhere in Europe, but also a select number of Transatlantic destinations. Nevertheless, as the main hub of Lufthansa Group, Frankfurt still has greater connecting possibilities for the new flight, as observed on Cirium’s data.

BoardingPass.ro notes that the news follow the announcement of the end of Lufthansa’s flights connecting Frankfurt to the Romanian cities of Cluj and Timişoara.

Nevertheless, from next Summer group subsidiary Eurowings will start serving Chişinău from its bases in Cologne and Stuttgart, with both routes running between May and October, according to Cirium.
