Slovenia and Italy sign contract for the purchase of second Leonardo C-27J Spartan

Leonardo and the Directorate for Air Armament and Airworthiness of the Italian General Secretariat of Defense / National Armament Directorate signed a Purchase Contract to supply the Slovenian Ministry of Defense with a second C-27J Spartan aircraft and related logistics and training services.

The contract follows the Government-to-Government (G2G) agreement between Italy and Slovenia signed on November 17, 2021, which aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Dario Marfè, Senior Vice President of Commercial, CSS&T & Proprietary Programs Business of Leonardo’s Aircraft Division, said: ‘Deployed in the most challenging geographic, environmental and operating contexts, Leonardo’s C-27J Spartan is an aircraft capable of performing various types of defence and civil protection missions. Extensive experience with air forces worldwide makes it the ideal aircraft for military transport missions, paratrooper and materials airdrops, ‘last mile’ tactical troop support, special forces operations, medical battlefield evacuation, humanitarian assistance and natural disaster response.’

The contract for the procurement of the first C-27J Spartan for Slovenia was signed on 30-3-2022.

According to the manufacturer, the C-27J Spartan Next Generation incorporates new avionics in a glass cockpit with five multifunction color displays, a radar system for tactical transport missions and advanced communication systems. The system architecture ensures interoperability with other transport aircraft. It is easy to integrate with in-flight refueling, self-protection, secure communications and ballistic protection systems to operate in high-threat environments, transporting materials, light vehicles and personnel where needed..

With multiple roll-on/roll-off mission kits and easily installable and transportable roll-on/roll-off mission systems, the C-27J can be quickly transformed into the configuration required for the current mission. The new Fire Fighter configuration, also previously purchased under the intergovernmental agreements between Italy and Slovenia, features the second-generation palletised MAFFS II (Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System) from United Aeronautical Corporation, world leader in advanced aerial fire-fighting application systems.
