#TBT: Aeroperú flights to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Chile in 1986

Aeroperú was the Peruvian state airline that operated between 1973 and 1999. Its first flight was in October 1973, covering the route LimaCuzco in a Fokker 28 Fellowship.

The company grew significantly over the years, reaching a big schedule within Peru as well as in the rest of America.

From Lima, Aeroperú had services to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay and Venezuela in the Latin American sector, and Los Angeles, Miami, New York in the United States.

In mid 1990, due to an accumulation of losses and the country’s situation, the Peruvian government decided to privatize Aeroperú, which was acquired by the Cintra Group, a Mexican holding company.

On October 2nd, 1996, the Boeing 757-23A, registration N52AW, crashed into the sea minutes after takeoff from Lima airport on its way to Santiago de Chile (see cause – article in Spanish). 70 passengers died in the accident.

As a consequence, Aeroperú declared bankruptcy in March 1999, ceasing operations on March 10th of that month.
