The Mallorca Daily Bulletin has reported that American Airlines is planning nonstop service between Miami and Palma. Although no schedule details are available, it is estimated that the route will initially have a weekly frequency. Should this route materialize, it would be the second non-stop connection between Mallorca and the United States.
In response to an inquiry from Aviacionline, American Airlines replied, “We continuously evaluate our network, but at the moment we have nothing new to announce for Mallorca.”
In addition to the tourism contribution that this possible route would offer. For Mallorca’s hotel chains and workers, Miami is a key airport for connecting to popular destinations in Aruba, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Mexico.
Given the popularity of United’s service between Newark and Palma de Mallorca, several airlines are evaluating the possibilities of new routes in the Balearics. United began service in 2022 and during the summer season of 2023 recorded a 30% increase in bookings.
As reported in the Mallorcan media, United’s service has become the company’s most profitable Spanish route. This connection has stimulated travel between North America and the Balearic island, consolidating Mallorca as a long-haul destination that is bringing in high-yield tourism.
Spain is American Airlines’ second largest European market. The airline currently offers nonstop service to Madrid and Barcelona from hubs in New York, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Miami, Chicago O’Hare and Dallas/Fort Worth. In total, by the 2024 summer season, American will have more than 35,000 weekly seats on offer between Spain and the United States.
