Top 10 Latin America’s Busiest Airports Revealed for 2022

Mexico City International Airport once again led in 2022 the ranking among airports with the most passenger traffic in Latin America and the Caribbean, with 46.3 million, a figure 28.3% higher than the previous year. Second place went to the El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá with 35.4 million passengers, surpassing the São Paulo/Guarulhos airport (34.5 million passengers), allowing it to also become the South American leader for the first time in its history.

This comes from the annual report published today by the International Airport Council for Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC), an organization that brings together airport operators from the region.

The top 10 airports in Latin America and the Caribbean play a key role in connecting our countries, promoting economic development and improving our connectivity with the world“, said Dr. Rafael Echevarne, Director General of ACI-LAC, during the Top 10 presentation.

The airport that registered the highest growth among the top ten was São Paulo-Congonhas, with a staggering 87.3% more passengers than in 2021, mobilizing 18 million during 2022.

Regarding cargo traffic, the first place went to El Dorado Airport in Bogotá, whose volume grew by 4.1% compared to 2021. Second place went to the Mexico City International Airport, and third to the Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport in Santiago de Chile.

Overall, cargo traffic increased by 1.3% in 2022, with domestic traffic growing by 0.7% and international decreasing by 3%.

This is the only segment where an Argentinian airport appears among the top 10, that being Buenos Aires/Ezeiza.

Ranking of busiest Latin American airports by aircraft movements 2022

Aircraft movements at Latin American airports grew by 28% in 2022, with the top spot once again occupied by MEX with 387,450 flights (+18.2%), followed by El Dorado with 296,777 flights (+38.3%) and São Paulo-Guarulhos with 242,888 flights (+28.8%).
