#TBT: United Airlines flights to Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay in 1992

As part of Pan Am’s emergency liquidation in December 1991, its international routes from Miami to Europe and Latin America were sold to United Airlines for US$135 million.

United began operations between Miami and Latin America in mid-1992, scheduling 14 weekly flights considering Argentina, Brazil and Chile:

  • Buenos Aires
  • Rio de Janeiro
  • Sao Paulo
  • Santiago de Chile

Services were operated with Boeing 747SP and Boeing 767 aircraft, which had three seating configurations (Business, Premium Economy and Economy).

In addition to Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Santiago, the airline operated to Montevideo from Boston, New York and Galeao.

United Airlines closed its international hub at Miami airport in 2004 after 12 years of operations, moving its services to Chicago.

Currently, Chicago, Houston, Newark and Washington have United connections to South America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Perú).
