LATAM Airlines Commander Passes Away Mid-Flight: What we Know

On Tuesday August 15th, LATAM Airlines reported that the commander of flight LA505, operating the route between Miami (MIA) and Santiago de Chile (SCL), passed away after experiencing a health issue during the flight. An emergency diversion to Tocumen Airport in Panama was required.

According to the airline’s statement, «Procedures were carried out during the flight to safeguard the affected pilot’s life. However, after landing and receiving ground assistance, the captain passed away.» The aircraft, a Boeing 787-9 with registration CC-BGI, was flown by the other crew members assigned to that flight.

The company also mentions that Iván Andaur, the unfortunately deceased pilot, had 25 years of experience with the company, highlighting his dedication, commitment and professionalism, and expressing condolences

The passengers on the flight were re-embarked and headed to Santiago de Chile after 4 PM. Before departing for Santiago, they expressed their support to the crew with spontaneous applause.

The aircraft landed in the capital city of Chile, Santiago, at 11:58 PM local time.
