Egyptair requests DOT to fly to Los Angeles

Egyptair has applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to operate scheduled passenger, cargo and mail flights between Cairo (CAI) and Los Angeles (LAX). The airline is requesting that waiver authority to serve the new destination be granted for a period of two years or such longer period as the Department may direct.

Egyptair began operations in the United States in 1986 with service to New York, currently the airline serves John F. Kennedy Airport, Washington – Dulles and Newark. In addition, the Egyptian flag carrier is the only airline to have non-stop flights between Egypt and the United States.

Once the application is authorized by the department, the company is scheduled to begin service to Los Angeles starting in October 2023, and expects to begin marketing and advertising activities immediately.

With this potential service, Los Angeles (LAX) will once again have a direct connection to Africa, and will once again be connected to six continents. The last operation was an Ethiopian Airlines service from Addis Ababa (ADD) via Lome (LFW), which ceased during the 2019 summer season.

Egyptair’s U.S. summer schedule offers daily flights to New York (JFK) operated on Boeing 777-300ERs and three weekly flights operated on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners to Washington – Dulles and Newark. In total, the airline offers 8,552 seats per week between Egypt and the United States.

International Expansion

Egyptair continues to enhance its hub at Cairo International Airport with new services from different continents, expanding its global destination offering. The airline recently inaugurated new non-stop connections to Delhi and Manchester, and is scheduled to restart flights to Tokyo/Narita and begin charter flights to Sao Paulo/Guarhulos.
