Italy-Libya flights to be restarted this year

Following a meeting between representatives of the two countries in Tripoli, flights connecting Italy to Libya are expected to be restarted by September of this year. The information was confirmed by the Libyan Prime Minister, Abdulhamid al-Dabaiba, through his Twitter account.

This follows a suspension of flights which has lasted since the later stages of 2014, given the political stability that had plagued Libya since 2011 and that had worsened at the time.

Libya has Italy as a major exporter and a country with close relations, given that it is a former Italian colony. In 2013, the final year before the halting of flights, 1,096 departures with over 145 thousand seats were operated between the two countries, according to Cirium’s Diio Mi application.

To the European Union, Libya already has flights to Greece and Malta, always with EU-registered aircraft, given that the EU ban on Libyan-registered airplanes is still in effect.
