With more than 80 aircraft in its fleet, Norwegian prepares for summer demand

Norwegian Air Shuttle has announced that it transported 1.9 million passengers in May, representing a 17% increase compared to the same period last year. According to Norwegian, the average load factor was 84%, reaching 90% on routes to the most popular vacation destinations.

“May was another solid month for Norwegian in terms of passenger traffic. Many travelers have already started their vacation journeys, taking advantage of the many holidays and long weekends in May to escape to our many beach and city destinations throughout Europe. Our average load factor on these flights was 90%,” stated Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian.

The airline’s capacity in May, measured in Available Seat Kilometers (ASK), was 2.901 billion, while passenger traffic, measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPK), was 2.44 billion. During this month, the company operated an average of 74 aircraft with a regularity of 99.7 percent, and a punctuality rate of 84.9%. According to Norwegian, these achievements were reached despite the ongoing air traffic control issues at Copenhagen Airport.

Looking ahead to the expected influx of passengers in the busy summer season, the company has demonstrated its preparedness by receiving its latest delivery of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, prior to the summer. Norwegian’s fleet, which currently comprises 81 aircraft, includes 13 units of the modern and fuel-efficient Boeing 737 MAX 8, underlining the airline’s commitment to reducing emissions through fleet renewal.

The airline’s CEO, Geir Karlsen, concluded: “I am very pleased to have received all the new aircraft planned for the summer season, as well as having welcomed many new colleagues on board. This means that we will serve our customers only with flights operated by Norwegian and we will not require leases from third parties. We encourage customers who need to travel on specific dates during the busiest weeks of July to book their flights with us as soon as possible.”
