In mid-2007, American Airlines announced the inauguration of scheduled flights between Chicago and Buenos Aires as of December 13th of that year. The U.S. carrier was investing heavily in this route, starting with a daily frequency on Boeing 767-300(ER) aircraft.

American reached 35 weekly services between the United States and Argentina with the start-up of Chicago (14 Miami, 7 New York, Dallas and Chicago). The company also had four weekly flights to Montevideo.

United Airlines had been the last carrier to operate between Chicago and Buenos Aires, until March 2006.

A few months after inaugurating its operations, American Airlines confirmed the cancellation of services between both cities, as part of a process of flight reduction, which also affected other routes of the airline. On September 1st, American’s last flight departed from Ezeiza to Chicago.

Operations averaged 70% occupancy, considering the nine months of flights.

Since then, Chicago and Buenos Aires have not had a regular non-stop connection and are not expected to return in the near future.

Los Angeles was another American bet on the Argentine capital, which was extended from December 2018 to March 2020. The suspension due to the pandemic definitively cancelled the company’s plans on this route.
