Scandinavian Airlines System, also known as SAS, operated flights between Denmark and South America with McDonnell Douglas DC-10 aircraft in 1987. Operations were from Copenhagen to Rio de Janeiro, with connections to Argentina, Chile and Uruguay in the South American sector, and to Norway and Sweden considering the Baltic region.

The airline definitively suspended operations to South America in the early 1990s, after more than 20 years of uninterrupted service.

The routes Rio de Janeiro – Buenos Aires and vice versa, and Rio de Janeiro – Montevideo – Santiago de Chile and vice versa were operated by chartered Boeing 727 aircraft. SAS DC-10s did not serve Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.
