easyJet Expansion: Birmingham Becomes Ninth Base in UK

easyJet has announced the strengthening of its operations in the UK by unveiling a new hub in Birmingham (BHX), slated to launch by Spring 2024. This strategic move will generate around 100 direct roles for pilots and crew members and catalyze the creation of a total of 1,200 jobs, indicating that each aircraft under the UK-based airline could directly support 4,000 jobs.

The budget airline plans to station three 186-seater Airbus A320s at this new hub. The addition of Birmingham to its list of UK bases, the ninth in its network, underscores the airline’s ongoing growth strategy and strong demand for leisure destinations.

The UK Remains easyJet’s Primary Market

Johan Lundgren, CEO of easyJet, highlighted the importance of the UK market, stating, «The UK is easyJet’s largest market, with 55% of all easyJet passengers flying to and from UK airports. This initiative will further solidify our position as the UK’s leading airline.»

In response to burgeoning travel demand, easyJet has been progressively expanding its operations. In fact, this year, the airline launched its most extensive summer schedule in the UK, surpassing its pre-pandemic offering by 8%. In the peak season, it is set to offer over one million seats and 57 new routes, including 23 originating from the UK.

From its base in Birmingham (BHX), the airline currently connects passengers to sought-after destinations such as Amsterdam, Geneva, Milan, Naples, Lisbon, Faro, and Palma de Mallorca. The increased presence at the airport will facilitate the introduction of new routes.

Birmingham Airport Welcomes easyJet’s Investment

Nick Barton, Chief Executive of Birmingham Airport (BHX), celebrated the investment, saying, «This historic investment by easyJet is a significant endorsement for the West Midlands. The three-aircraft base at BHX will create a wealth of jobs for local people and offer greater choice to customers.»

easyJet’s other UK hubs include London Gatwick, London Luton, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Belfast. Moreover, easyJet Holidays has become the region’s fastest-growing holiday company.
