Delta Wants to Expand in Colombia, Doubling Bogota Flights and Resuming Cartagena Route

-

Delta Air Lines, has recently approached the Aeronautica Civil de Colombia to propose an increase in frequency for an existing service, in addition to introducing a new route. The company is presently operating daily flights on the Atlanta – Bogota and New York – Bogota routes.

Delta to fly between New York (LGA) and Salt Lake City

The news comes not long after LATAM Airlines, Delta’s new associate, announced the launch of a non-stop service between Bogota and Orlando. This new venture will further strengthen its existing operations between Miami and the Colombian capital.

As per data gathered by Aviacionline from Aerocivil statistics, Delta recorded a footfall of 264,128 passengers and transported 3,671 tons of cargo between the United States and Colombia in 2022, maintaining an occupancy factor of 84%.

Delta’s Proposed Services

  • A proposed increase from 7 to 14 weekly flights on the Atlanta – Bogota route, which will be operated on Boeing 757s.
  • The introduction of a new route between Atlanta and Cartagena with three weekly flights, expected to be operated on Boeing 737-800.

Should the proposed increase in flights on the Atlanta – Bogota route come to fruition, Delta will reinstate its twice daily flights between Hartsfield – Jackson International Airport and Colombia, a practice last followed in November 2016.

The airline last provided services between Atlanta and Cartagena in March 2020, with five weekly flights operated on Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft. This direct connection was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. However, if this route is realized, Rafael Nuñez International Airport will once again welcome four U.S. airlines.

As of June this year, Delta has planned to offer 5,572 weekly seats between Colombia and the United States. If approved by Aerocivil, this would result in Delta having the most substantial seat capacity in the South American nation since the summer season of 2016.

Late in 2022, Delta and LATAM Airlines launched their partnership and have since declared new routes between New York – Rio de Janeiro and Los Angeles – Sao Paulo; added a second daily operation between Atlanta and Sao Paulo; and increased capacity on the Lima – Atlanta and Santiago – Atlanta routes by introducing the Airbus A350-900.
