Conviasa aims for growth and schedules flights between Caracas and Merida

-

Conviasa reinforces its domestic operations with the scheduling of a non-stop flight between Caracas (CCS) and Merida (MRD), the sixth route offered by the state-owned company in the Andean region of Venezuela. With this new service, commercial air services from Alberto Carnevalli Airport (MRD) are reactivated.

«Ticket sales are already available at the Conviasa offices in the Merida, El Vigia and Maiquetia offices, as well as in the tourist operating companies (travel agencies)«, said Jehyson Guzman, governor of Merida state through his social networks.

During the last quarter of 2022, Conviasa’s Aeronautical Maintenance Organization carried out the maintenance work required by the Venezuelan aeronautical authorities to reactivate the ATR 42 registered under registration number YV1009. The incorporation of this aircraft is part of the state-owned airline’s plan to reinforce air operations nationwide, including the introduction of services to Puerto Ayacucho (PYH) and soon Mérida (MRD).

In 2009, scheduled passenger flights were completely suspended at Alberto Carnevalli airport (MRD) as a result of the accident of Santa Barbara Airlines flight 518 on February 21, 2008.

After five years air operations were resumed at the terminal on August 1, 2013 with Conviasa and Avior Airlines services, but due to operational limitations and fuel supply problems commercial flights became commercially unviable and the airlines cancelled their services.

With the initiative of the «Ministerio del Poder Popular para el Transporte», the Instituto Nacional de Aeronáutica Civil (INAC), the Gobernación del Estado Mérida and Conviasa, a plan for the reopening of the Alberto Carnevalli Airport (MRD) was carried out, complying with all the requirements of the law, with the objective of strengthening the air connectivity of the Andean region of the country.
