Iberia leaves pandemic behind and boosts flights to Portugal

Iberia for the 2023 summer season has scheduled 730,000 seats to Portugal, up 18% when compared to pre-pandemic levels and for August, the peak month for traveler demand will have 79 weekly flights, which is 25% more than in 2019.

The IAG airline will resume its seasonal services to Faro (FAO) and Ponta Delgada (PDL). Iberia during the holiday period will be the fourth largest airline in the segment between Spain and Portugal in terms of seats per kilometers offered (ASK) with a 12.1% share of the market according to information obtained through the Cirium platform.

Flights between Madrid and Faro

Iberia will start its services at Gago Coutinho Airport (FAO) in June with three weekly flights and in August will increase its schedule to fly every day. This route will be operated by Iberia Regional/Air Nostrum with a CRJ-1000 with a capacity of 100 passengers.

The service operates from June 2 through September 30.

Madrid (MAD) – Faro (FAO)
  • Flight IB 8778 MAD 11:30 – FAO 11:55 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • Flight IB 8778 MAD 07:20 – FAO 07:45 Thursday and Saturday.
  • Flight IB 8778 MAD 16:35 – FAO 17:05 Sunday.
Faro (FAO) – Madrid (MAD)
  • Flight IB 8779 FAO 12:25 – MAD 14:55 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • Flight IB 8779 FAO 08:15 – MAD 10:40 Thursday and Saturday.
  • Flight IB 8779 FAO 17:35 – MAD 20:05 Sunday.

Flights between Madrid and Azores

In July, Iberia will resume operations at João Paulo II Airport (PDL) with three weekly flights. The route will be operated by Airbus A320 with a capacity of 180 passengers.

The service will be available from July 1 to September 30.

Madrid (MAD) – Ponta Delgada (PDL)
  • Flight IB 3368 MAD 15:40 – PDL 17:05 Monday.
  • Flight IB 3368 MAD 08:40 – PDL 10:05 Wednesday and Saturday.
Ponta Delgada (PDL) – Madrid (MAD)
  • Flight IB 3369 PDL 17:45 – MAD 23:00 Monday.
  • Flight IB 3369 PDL 10:45 – MAD 16:00 Wednesday and Saturday.

Iberia’s August schedule in Portugal will offer up to six daily flights to Lisbon (LIS), four daily flights to Oporto (OPO) and daily flights to Madeira – Funchal (FNC), the latter started as a seasonal route and in the winter became a year-round operation.

According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Aena Estadísticas, 5,392,152 passengers and 15,405.4 tons of cargo were moved between Spain and Portugal in 51,250 air operations.
