General Atomics Aeronautical Systems’ (GA-ASI) new MQ-9B Mojave drone demonstrated its impressive STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) capabilities in a test in which it managed to take off and land in less than 100 meters.
This isn’t notional, theoretical, conceptual, or planned – it’s proven.

The Mojave is the newest member of the MQ-9 Reaper family of reconnaissance and attack drones, specially designed to perform short takeoffs and landings (STOL) from semi-prepared runways and to carry increased firepower. It features enlarged wings with high-lift devices, reinforced airframe and landing gear, as well as a 450 hp turboprop engine.
The MQ-9B’s STOL capability increases the number of employment options, such as deployment from forward bases and, potentially, carrier-based options or amphibious assault ships, unlocking naval missions and sea-based support for special operations forces.

During a recent test, a Mojave drone managed to take off and land from just 300 feet (less than 100 meters) of runway, confirming its exceptional STOL characteristics. Not only can the MQ-9B quickly land, rearm and take off from austere sites in close proximity to the front lines, but it can carry twice as much payload as previous models. Its increased wing area allows it to carry up to 1,633 kg (3,600 lb), which adds up to 16 AGM-114 Hellfire or equivalent missiles.
The Mojave can also be equipped with a suite of sensors including EO/IR, Synthetic Aperture Radar/Ground Moving Target Indicator (SAR/GMTI) and Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) to support land or maritime missions.
