Uncertainty looms over cities affected by Aeromar demise

-

Aeromar confirmed on Wednesday that it will cease operations after several months of agony as a result of the economic crisis it was going through.

Although Aeromar accounted for just 0.8% of the total number of seats in the Mexican market in February, its closure will be felt much more strongly in some communities where it was the only company providing scheduled flights due to its regional airline profile.

Ciudad Victoria (CVM), Ixtepec (IZT) and Piedras Negras (PDS) are the three cities that will no longer have scheduled flights as a result of Aeromar’s shutdown, according to information gathered by Aviacionline through Cirium. The company operated five flights a week in each of them, linking them to Mexico City International Airport (MEX).

On the other hand, the termination of Aeromar will also mean the cancellation of four domestic routes as no other airline operates them: Aguascalientes (AGU) – Mexico City (11 weekly flights), Colima (CLQ) – Mexico City (7 weekly flights) and Tepic (TPQ) – Mexico City (7 weekly flights). In Aguascalientes – Puerto Vallarta and Cancun – Villahermosa, only TAR Aerolineas and Viva Aerobus will be operating respectively.

To alleviate this situation, Aeromexico announced that it will bring forward the start of its flights from Mexico City to Ciudad Victoria, Colima and Tepic from 16 March.

In the international segment, Aeromar was the only company operating between Mexico City and McAllen, Texas, with three weekly flights. In January it had already stopped flying between Cancún and Managua, Mexico City and Laredo, and Monterrey and McAllen, as well as between Cancún and Havana, although Viva Aerobús continues to fly on the latter segment.

Aeromar’s network in February 2023 covered 13 cities in Mexico and 2 abroad.

Aeromar’s hopes are now pinned on Nella, a US-based company chaired by a Brazilian entrepeneur, which is trying to acquire it. It is not known what action the holding company will take in response to the news of the termination of operations, but until last week representatives of the company were expected to hold a meeting with the government to propose a payment plan to restructure the airline’s debt.
