A year after announcing that Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, North Carolina, would house the Superfactory for its Overture supersonic aircraft, Boom today broke ground on the facility. This marks an important milestone ahead of the planned launch of Overture production in 2024.
The announcement event, held at Piedmont Triad International Airport, was attended by North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Senate Leader Phil Berger, and other elected officials and community leaders involved in Boom’s decision to choose North Carolina as the site for the factory.
This state-of-the-art facility will be used to produce and assemble the Overture, Boom’s supersonic business jet. The Overture, capable of flying on 100% sustainable jet fuel, can carry 65 to 80 passengers at twice the speed of today’s fastest passenger jets. The 62-acre site will also include a test facility and customer delivery center for the Overture.
“Today’s groundbreaking of the Overture superfactory represents an important step forward in building sustainable and affordable supersonic travel for the world,” said Kathy Savitt, president of Boom Supersonic. “This milestone is shared, and we deeply appreciate the input, leadership and support of the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority, the local community and the state of North Carolina.”
Boom’s economic impact on North Carolina

By 2032, Boom plans to hire more than 2,400 workers at the Superfactory, and hiring is already underway. North Carolina economists estimate that Boom’s full manufacturing program will grow the state’s economy by at least $32.3 billion over 20 years.
The Superfactory, a sustainable complex
BE&K Building Group will undertake construction of the site, in collaboration with design firm BRPH, and is scheduled for completion in 2023. The building will be LEED certified, in line with Boom’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
