Arajet, the Caribbean region’s newest low-cost airline, closed 2022 as the largest airline based in the Dominican Republic.
The airline, which began operations on September 15, said it had carried more than 81,000 passengers to and from the Dominican Republic as of December 31. By 2023, Arajet said it expects to offer more than 500,000 seats to passengers from North, Central and South America and the Caribbean.
Born as DW Dominican Wings in 2014, the company operated several charter flights with Airbus A320 aircraft. In 2018 it changed its corporate name to Flycana, maintaining its air operator certificate, to transform itself into an ultra-low-cost. With the emergence in 2020 of a new airline called SkyCana and in order not to cause confusion in the market, Flycana was forced to change its name. In March, Arajet surprised by announcing an order for up to 35 Boeing 737-8200s. This high-density version of the MAX 8 seats 210 passengers. Arajet was the first U.S. airline to order the variant.

In this regard, Victor Pacheco, CEO, and founder of the company, said: «I am extremely proud of what we have achieved in such a short time. Since Arajet officially began operations in September of 2022, thousands of Dominicans who had never flown before have been able to do so. We are very excited to focus on continuing our positive impact in bringing tourists from destinations that have never connected directly to our country.
Arajet has opened 17 destinations since its launch and is the only airline in the region to start operations with brand-new aircraft. «We expect to double our fleet of Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft by 2023. We also want to maintain our performance and respect our growth plan while providing Dominican travelers with new flight options, lower fares, and better service,» added Pacheco.
