#TBT: Varig flights between Rio de Janeiro, Lima, Los Angeles and Tokyo in 1987

-

In 1968, Varig inaugurated flights between Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, taking an important step in its international route schedule. Operations began with Boeing 707s making stopovers in Lima, Los Angeles and Honolulu.

The Brazilian company was the second to offer direct services between South America and Asia, after Panair do Brasil.

In the late 1970s, Varig introduced Boeing 747s on the route. In addition, the airline cut the total flight time, removing Honolulu as one of the stops.

Varig had three weekly flights between Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo in 1987 (one with stopovers in Lima and Los Angeles and two others with stops in the U.S. city).
