In February 1969, South African Airways inaugurated flights between Johannesburg and New York with a stopover in Rio de Janeiro. The services were able to carry passengers on all legs.
The African company carried out these operations in Boeing 707-300s, which had two seatting classes (First and Economy).

At the time, New York and Rio de Janeiro were South African Airways’ only destinations in the Americas.

South African Airways made its last service to Rio de Janeiro in the late 1980s.
As can be seen in flight schedules of the time, South African in association with Aerolineas Argentinas had a weekly operation between Buenos Aires and Cape Town and vice versa with Boeing 707s.
