#TBT: Qantas flights between Sydney and London with stopovers in Mexico and the Caribbean (1965)

The first Qantas flight between Sydney and London was in December 1947. At the time, the operation had stopovers in Darwin, Singapore, Calcutta, Karachi, Cairo, Castel Bento and Rome. The entire service lasted more than 4 days, with 58 hours of flight time.

During the following years the operation was reduced in duration, with the introduction of modern aircraft.

The first non-stop Qantas flight between London and Sydney was on August 16th, 1989. This was not a regular service.

By 1989 Qantas was scheduled to commence non-stop operations on the above route in the late 1990s. Finally, the carrier inaugurated non-stop flights between England and Australia in 2018, but not to and from Sydney. Qantas promises to launch Sydney-London nonstop service in 2025.

More than 50 years ago, Qantas operated between Sydney and London with Boeing 707s. One of its legs had stopovers in Mexico and the Caribbean. Mexico City, Acapulco, Nassau and Bermuda were part of the flight schedule.

  • «Fiesta Route». That was Qantas’ name for the route between Sydney and London with stops in Mexico and the Caribbean.
  • These flights were carried out in Boeing 707s.
