Flight delays at Buenos Aires’ region due to Air Traffic Control outage

Air operations in the Buenos Aires area were affected as of Sunday morning, July 17, by a failure in the FIR (Flight Information Region) Ezeiza air control system, which provides navigation information to Pistarini, Aeroparque and San Fernando airports, among others.

The systems failure forced the Ezeiza Area Control Center (ACC) to space operations, separating them by 15 to 20 minutes, with the consequent delays in landings and takeoffs. Fortunately, the weather is good and there are no complications due to fog or low operating ceilings.

A flight information region (FIR) is a specific region of the airspace in which a flight information service and an alert service (ALRS) is provided. The Argentine territory is divided into five FIRs:

  1. Resistencia
  2.  Córdoba
  3. Mendoza
  4. Ezeiza
  5. Comodoro Rivadavia

FIR Ezeiza

Although an air traffic control failure at FIR Ezeiza will affect more airports than the three mentioned above, the volume of operations of these airports will not allow to move to delays in scheduled takeoffs and landings.

The Empresa Argentina de Navegación Aérea (EANA) shared an update of the inconvenience through social networks and clarified that it would be a «power outage» affecting takeoffs at Terminal BAIRES in the aforementioned Region.

This is a developing story.
