According to several sources, the White House will announce this Friday the elimination of the requirement to present a negative COVID-19 test the day before boarding an international flight to the United States.
The measure would go into effect on Sunday, June 12 at 00:01 ET (GMT -4). According to an Associated Press report, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will reassess the need for the testing requirements every 90 days, keeping the possibility of reinstating tests if a troubling new variant emerges.
The test mandate has been increasingly opposed by the travel and tourism industry in the United States: this week at the IPW event held in Orlando, Roger Dow, president of the US Travel Association, insisted on the need for the government to eliminate entry testing.
According to the association he presides, eliminating testing could add 5.4 million international tourists in 2022, who in turn would spend USD 9 billion.
