French-Italian regional aircraft manufacturer ATR announced yesterday that the first flight of a commercial aircraft using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will take place in Sweden.
The operation will be carried out with an ATR 72-600 of Braathens Regional, an airline based in Trollhättan. The company, which has a fleet consisting entirely of ATR aircraft, offers charter services and scheduled connections in Sweden and Norway.
The 100% SAF flight is reported to take place «soon» and will connect Malmö (MMX) with Stockholm-Bromma (BMA). Neste will provide the fuel. It will be a demo flight: the goal, according to the manufacturer, is to advance in the aircraft’s certification process to operate entirely on sustainable aviation fuel between 2024 and 2025.
In 2019, Braathens completed, for the first time, a flight powered by 50% sustainable fuel, blended with traditional fuel. The initiative enabled a reduction of up to 46% of the associated carbon dioxide emissions, noted specialists from the manufacturer.
