Peru: Juliaca airport closed again for runway maintenance work

-

The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) and Aeropuertos Andinos de Peru (AAP) ordered the temporary closure of the runway of the Inca Manco Capac International Airport, located in Juliaca (Puno), between May 23 and May 29 to carry out repair works.

The General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC) of the MTC carried out the corresponding evaluations and determined the need to close the runway of the airport, to ensure safety standards for the benefit of passengers and air operations.

The work, to be carried out by the airport concessionaire, is expected to last until May 29.

This is the second time the airport has been closed in recent months. On April 29, the closure was announced for the same reason, which was scheduled to last until May 5, but was extended until May 8 by decision of the DGAC.

The airport has a 4200 m long runway, two taxiways and a parking apron. Due to the continuous operations, the severe weather conditions of the area, the temperature gradient, the presence of high-water tables and a deficient drainage system, the pavement has lost its optimum condition characteristics.

In view of this situation, the airlines informed that affected travelers will have flexibility for changes and/or refunds without any kind of penalty.

Another flexibility is the possibility of changing to the nearest airport, such as Cusco (CUZ), Tacna (TCQ) or Arequipa (AQP).

LATAM has 28 weekly flights and SKY another 10 weekly flights from Lima (LIM).
