The Alitalia heiress, which recently began operations, announced that it will make the most sustainable flights in its – short – history as part of the SkyTeam alliance’s Sustainable Flight Challenge.
This Saturday, May 7, ITA Airways will operate flight AZ110 with an Airbus 320, connecting Rome-Fiumicino and Amsterdam-Schiphol airports in a sustainable manner, in line with what the other airlines in the alliance are doing to reduce the environmental impact of their business.

A week later, on May 14, the airline will do the same on a flight connecting the Italian capital with New York in the United States, which will be covered by an Airbus 330 under the number AZ608.
But what do ITA’s sustainable flights consist of? As reported by the company, operations will be carried out with «alternative fuels», in addition to extraordinary operating procedures involving different departments of the company committed to the project.
Likewise, passengers will be offered a sustainable catering service, waste will be recycled, and the carbon emission of the flight will be offset through the reforestation projects that the company is supporting in Africa and South America.
According to a press release, «sustainability is one of the pillars of ITA Airways’ strategy since the first day of its activity and it is also pursued through the renewal of the fleet, which includes new generation aircraft with lower environmental impact». In fact, the company has orders for aircraft that stand out for their fuel efficiency, such as the Airbus A350, A220, A320neo and A321neo models.

The Sustainable Flight Challenge, organized by the SkyTeam alliance, is a sort of friendly competition between sixteen participating airlines that will conduct flights applying their sustainability strategies between May 1 and 14.
The initiative seeks to explore, test and share everything that can contribute to reducing the environmental impact of air operations and define best practices for the sustainable future of the sector.
