Rivera Airport becomes part of Aeropuertos Uruguay and will be modernized

Within the framework of the development and modernization plan of the National System of International Airports, Aeropuertos Uruguay took possession of the International Air Terminal «Presidente General Oscar D. Gestido», which serves Rivera, a city on the border with Brazil.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister of National Defense, Javier García; the Mayor of Rivera, Richard Sander; representatives of Aeropuertos Uruguay, and national and departmental authorities.

Rivera is the second airport of the National System of International Airports to be managed by the company that manages Carrasco and Punta del Este airports.

In 2021, the concession will manage and modernize the air terminals of Salto, Carmelo, Durazno, Melo and Paysandú.

Works to be carried out in Rivera

The concessionaire plans to invest around US$ 13 million in the airport.

The works will include the modernization of the passenger terminal, building improvements in the control tower, as well as the installation of renewed aeronautical communications equipment and an internal fiber optic ring.

In addition, aeronautical infrastructure will be improved by resurfacing the main runway and installing LED lights on the runway, taxiways, and aprons, among other improvements.

The objective is to bring it up to the highest operational safety standards, in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization regulations. Work on the Rivera airport will begin in 2023, generating 150 direct and indirect jobs.
