The president of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC), Dr. José E. Marte Piantini, in an extraordinary session released the official statistics for the month of February 2022 where a total of 1,176,842 passengers and 9,028 air operations were mobilized, register figures higher than pre-pandemic levels.

Punta Cana (PUJ) continues to be the main airport in the Dominican Republic, handling a total of 609,481 passengers during February 2022. This represents 52% of the total market share. In addition, for the first time, this airport handles more than half of the country’s passengers.

Santiago de los Caballeros (STI) and La Romana (LRM) airports set passenger records for the month under review. Meanwhile, Santo Domingo – Las Americas (SDQ) recorded its second-best February in its history.

CORSAIR applied for an Operating Permit to count with scheduled flights on the Paris Orly (ORY) – Punta Cana (PUJ) – Paris Orly (ORY) route. The French airline mobilized a total of 8,009 passengers on 37 non-scheduled or charter operations. Such were done on Airbus A330-300 aircraft during the period between December 11, 2021, to January 31, 2022.

«Air operations to and from the Dominican Republic are not only recovering but are continuing to grow steadily, in line with the vision of air-commercial relations as the mainstay of tourism. This is a task being carried out by the current government of the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, in conjunction with the other institutions of the sector,» said José E. Marte Piantini, president of the JAC.

Spirit Airlines requested permits to operate the Philadelphia (PHL) – Punta Cana (PUJ) – Philadelphia (PHL) route, operations are projected to begin on May 18, 2022, with a frequency of four times per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday).

Recent approvals

The CAB approved shared operations between operators Eurowings Discover with Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS, on routes connecting Frankfurt (FRA) with Punta Cana (PUJ), Santo Domingo (SDQ), La Romana (LRM), and Samaná (AZS, and Munich (MUC) and Punta Cana (PUJ).

Swoop’s application to operate scheduled passenger services on the Toronto (YYZ) – Punta Cana (PUJ) – Toronto (YYZ) route was also approved.
