Avianca adds three new destinations from San José, Costa Rica

Avianca, Colombia’s leading airline, began flying to three new destinations from San José. Starting this week, it added frequencies to Cartagena, Medellin and Quito. With the new services, the company operates twelve routes from Costa Rica and 57 weekly flights. It is the largest operator in the country, offering 10,000 seats per month.

Reyna Mejía, Avianca’s Commercial Manager for Central America, said that «Costa Rica has the ideal conditions to grow in connectivity and strengthen its inbound and outbound tourism».

She also highlighted the company’s offer in San José. The new connections are in addition to the existing ones to Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA), New York (JFK), Mexico City (MEX), Cancun (CUN), San Salvador (SAL), Lima (LIM), Bogota (BOG) and Guatemala City (GUA).

Ricardo Hernández, executive director of AERIS, the company that manages Costa Rica’s main air station, welcomed the increase in Avianca’s route offerings and said that the inauguration «strengthens the range of options for travellers» and contributes to the country’s economy.

Avianca also became the first operator to link the capitals of Costa Rica and Ecuador, two countries with great tourism potential. It is the airline’s fifth route in Ecuador; it also flies to Guayaquil.

Niels Olsen, Ecuador’s Minister of Tourism, said: «The opening of the new Quito-San José route is evidence of our commitment to continue connecting Ecuadorians and promoting Ecuador in other international destinations». The new service will also contribute to the reactivation of air transport in the country.

«We are sure that this will contribute to the stimulation of tourism between sister countries, as well as trade, production and other different objectives where connectivity is key to put more Ecuador in the world and more world in Ecuador», he concluded.
