Viva Aerobus will have flights to Medellín starting in April

-

After a month of having requested two new routes to Colombia, Viva Aerobus announced the landing in Medellin/Rionegro (MDE) from Cancun (CUN) and Mexico City (MEX) as of April 2022.

Competition between Mexico and Colombia continues to grow: a week ago Avianca announced two routes to Mexico and VIVA will connect Cartagena with Mexico.

Now Viva Aerobus will add, as of April 8, a daily connection from Medellin to Mexico City, and Cancun with three weekly flights (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays).

The ultra-low-cost carrier landed in Mexico in August 2021 with a connection between Bogota (BOG) and Mexico City (MEX). As of April will add its second daily frequency. Then, on December 16, it added a link between the Colombian capital and Cancun (CUN), which currently has a daily flight.

Viva Aerobus will have to compete with its commercial ally, Colombia’s VIVA Air, which has the José María Córdova International Airport as its main base. The Colombian ultra-low-cost carrier will have eleven weekly flights to Cancun and ten flights per week to Mexico City starting in April.

Aeromexico has one daily flight to Mexico City, Wingo three weekly flights to Cancun, and Avianca three weekly flights to both Mexican cities.

Medellin moved 135,020 passengers with Mexico during 2021, an increase of 22.59% over 2019 when it transported 110,138 passengers, according to data obtained from Aerocivil.

Aeromexico dominated in Medellin after moving 41,526 passengers in 2021, followed by VIVA with 26,820 passengers. And finally Wingo and Avianca with 16,796 and 15,517 passengers respectively.
