One of the replacements for Lufthansa’s Airbus A340 has been photographed and is almost ready: the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
The German carrier opted to purchase 20 units of this model in 2019. It can also be used by subsidiaries SWISS and Austrian Airlines. This news came as a surprise. The company had become one of the main operators of the Airbus A350 (competition for the Boeing 787).
At the time, the airline said it was taking advantage of a good opportunity. The U.S. manufacturer was offering discounts due to delays in deliveries of the 777Xs ordered by Lufthansa. And it was also an attempt to sell some aircraft that had been mothballed.
Among them was a 787-9 serial number 62143, which could have landed at Suparna Airlines, a company that is part of the Chinese group HNA, but they decided not to take delivery.
As reported by our partner site Aeroin, the unit in question was recently removed from storage and prepared for Lufthansa. It was captured at Boeing’s Charleston plant by photographer Brandon Ghany. The aircraft is already painted with the German company’s logo in its tail.
Yet to be known when the first delivery of the 787 will take place, as deliveries were suspended almost a year ago when the airframe failures were found.
What is already a fact is the first destination to which this model will operate for the German company from Frankfurt: Toronto Pearson (YYZ).
