Ipiales becomes Avianca’s new destination in Colombia

-

The San Luis Airport, which serves the city of Ipiales (IPI) and the municipalities of the province of Obando in the department of Nariño, will have a new airline with the arrival of Avianca in May 2022.

Avianca announced today the beginning of ticket sales to that city, where it will operate a daily flight in Airbus A320 aircraft with a capacity for 180 passengers, providing a weekly offer of 2,520 seats.

Ipiales will be Avianca’s second destination in the department of Nariño, given that it has 70 weekly services to Pasto (PSO) from Bogotá (BOG) and Cali (CLO).

«In 2021, we aimed to inaugurate 50 new routes in the next 3 years and we are getting closer and closer to achieving this. We continue to provide more and better point-to-point and nonstop connectivity opportunities for our customers to travel to their favorite destinations in the Americas and Europe, at more competitive fares and with a customized product that allows them to personalize their trip. This is how we combine the best of our 100 years with the practicality of the modern low-cost world,» said Ana María Copete, Avianca’s Colombia Sales Director.

Ipiales: current flights

Ipiales is a small Andean town in western Colombia, near the border town of Tulcán, Ecuador. It is known for its proximity to the Las Lajas Sanctuary, a Catholic pilgrimage site. Its Gothic-style church and arched bridge cross the Guáitara River in a steep-sided gorge southeast of town.

In 2015, work was inaugurated to expand the airport, which included the construction of a 2,500-meter runway that will allow it to land large aircraft such as the Airbus A320, in order to revive regional tourism in the area.

Since 2008 SATENA is the only airline operating in the city, with 4 flights per week from Bogotá (BOG), two flights per week from Cali (CLO), and one per week from Puerto Asís (PUU); all operated in ATR 42-600 with capacity for 47 passengers.

In 2019, the airport handled 35,447 passengers, of which 21,724 came from Bogotá, 7,157 from Cali and 6,566 from Puerto Asís.

Previously, LATAM Colombia operated with the fleet inherited from AIRES, from the same cities as SATENA.
