ZIPAIR Tokyo inaugurated low-cost segment on Tokyo/Narita – Los Angeles route

On December 25, ZIPAIR Tokyo, the low-cost subsidiary of Japan Airlines, landed on its first destination to the West Coast of the United States.

The company will operate three weekly flights between Tokyo (NRT) and Los Angeles (LAX) on Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. Its international network currently consists of Bangkok (BKK), Seoul Incheon (ICN), Singapore (SIN), and Honolulu (HNL). It is the first long-haul low-cost carrier to fly between the two cities.

Between January 14, 2022, and March 26, 2022, ZIPAIR Tokyo will increase its operation between Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Los Angeles (LAX) to six weekly flights operating almost every day except Sundays. As part of the airline’s destination network strategy, the company is focusing on those cities with a large Japanese community, with a large concentration of O&D traffic, catering to VFR traffic (friends and family visiting) and tourist demand.

ZIPAIR Tokyo has a fleet of three Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft and expects to receive the fourth aircraft soon, by the end of 2022 to have 6 units and by 2024 to have 10 aircraft.

As reported by aviationwire japan portal, the first flight to Los Angeles, ZG24 (787-8 with registration JA822J), took off from Narita at 14:39 with 53 passengers and 10 crew members, plus carried approximately 11.3 tons of cargo.

«The Narita – Los Angeles route was previously operated by full-service carriers (FCS). Now we can offer new options,» said Shingo Nishida, President of ZIPAIR Tokyo.

«The Los Angeles route is very important to Narita. There are a lot of Japanese residents and there is an Asian community. Indeed, we can expect cargo. We would like to constantly improve Narita’s functionalities to make it a customer-friendly airport» said Akihuko Tamura, President of Narita International Airport Corporation, for her part.

ZIPAIR has already announced its schedule for the 2022 northern summer season to the United States. Honolulu (HNL) will have three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and Los Angeles (LAX) will have the same frequencies but on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
