Renovation of the oldest runway at Málaga-Costa del Sol airport starts

Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport has started the renovation works of runway 13/31, the oldest of them all. The project includes the upgrading of the runway pavement (3,200 meters long) and all its taxiways for aircraft access and departure.

Aena has allocated an investment of almost 8 million euros (7,892,900 euros, to be precise) for these works, which have a completion period of 10 months.

In addition to the deep regeneration of the pavement of the runway axis (along with its entire length and its three-meter width), the project considers the renewal of the wearing course on the entire surface of the runway; the improvement of different turns of the airfield, through the execution of paved overpasses and the modification of the lighting and signaling associated with the taxiways, and the general improvement of the pavements in terms of slopes, resistance, leveling, obstacles, signaling and marking.

The works will also affect the road strip, with the leveling of stretches and the adaptation of the resistance in some islets. In addition, the project includes the replacement of the beaconing with LED technology and its adequacy in two fast exit lanes for use in both directions, among others.

As on previous occasions, the airport has planned to coincide the development of these works with the winter season, traditionally with less traffic, in order to minimize the impact on airport operations, which, while the works last, will be handled at night by runway 12/30, better known as the second runway.

This is not the first time that this procedure of night closure has been implemented to facilitate the works. It was already successfully carried out in recent years; in 2018, on the occasion of the renovation of the beaconing, and in 2011, with the works for the certification of the State Aviation Safety Agency (AESA), in compliance with international technical standards and the terms provided for in Royal Decree 862/2009, which approves the technical standards for the design and operation of aerodromes for public use.

The pavement regeneration works on runway 13/31 are part of the ongoing improvement process carried out by the infrastructure as a certified airport according to EU Regulation 139/2014.
