In March 2020, as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, American Airlines had its last operations to Rio de Janeiro from Miami and New York. The carrier operated on Boeing 777-200(ER) aircraft, configured with 273 seats in three classes.

American Airlines had a daily flight on both routes, offering almost 4,000 weekly seats.

Nine months after the cessation of operations to the Brazilian city, the airline resumed flights to Galeão from and to Miami with Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners.
