Venezuela: Amid economical turmoil, Caracas airport will adopt cryptocurrencies

-

The Simón Bolívar International Airport in Caracas is introducing a cryptocurrency payment process. Regional news agency El Siglo reported that the airport is currently working on adapting its payment systems to accept cryptocurrencies such as Dash, Bitcoin, and the national oil-backed digital currency Petro.

The digital assets can be used to purchase airline tickets and other airport services. The airport management said it will partner with Venezuela’s National Superintendence of Cryptocurrency Assets and Related Activities (Sunacrip) to launch the payment options.

Airport director Freddy Borges was quoted by the news agency as saying, «We need to advance these new economic and technological systems to be accessible. We will activate a button for cryptocurrency payments on the airport platforms and commercial activities in coordination with Sunacrip.»

Borges noted that the debut of crypto payments at the airport would support the company’s goal of promoting digital currency adoption. The new crypto payment options should also benefit foreign tourists.

Maiquetía International Airport is Venezuela’s largest airport and the main gateway to the country. Located northwest of the capital Caracas, it operates domestic and international flights.

The other side of (crypto)currency
Far beyond «glamour» and «modernity,» the nation’s financial struggles with hyperinflation and poverty have led to a growing love for bitcoin and other digital assets among the local population. Thus, it is not surprising that the South American country is one of the leaders in terms of cryptocurrency adoption.

Last year, Burger King Venezuela allowed customers in Caracas to pay their bills with some of the most popular cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, Binance Coin, Dash, and Tether.

A few months later, another well-known food chain, Pizza Hut, allowed customers to pay with Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dash, Litecoin, Binance Coin and others at all Pizza Hut stores in Caracas, Maracay, Maracaibo and Barquisimeto.
