The first KC-390 crew of the Portuguese Air Force started their training

A crew, composed of two pilots and two Loadmasters from the Portuguese Air Force (FAP), are undergoing training on the KC-390 Millennium aircraft, since September 14, at Wing 2, in Anapolis, Brazil.

Portugal is the first export customer of the KC-390 Millennium (the second is Hungary), of which it ordered 5 copies in 2019, for $930 million. The purchase includes a flight simulator and logistics support for a 12-year extension.

As the FAP takes delivery of the new Millenniums, they will replace its worn-out fleet of C-130H Hercules from the 501st “Bison” Squadron. The delivery of the last aircraft should take place during 2027.

As reported by the FAP in a press release, the training, conducted by the 1st Troop Transport Group of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), includes the theoretical and practical components of the KC-390 Millennium.

Bilateral cooperation between the two countries is strengthened by the exchange of experiences. While the FAP benefits from the FAB’s accumulated experience with the aircraft (which saw extensive use during the COVID-19 pandemic), the latter benefits from Portugal’s experience in aeronautical transport.

A new standard

According to the manufacturer, the KC-390 is a military tactical transport aircraft designed to set new standards in its category. Some of the aircraft’s strengths are mobility, robust design, greater flexibility, proven state-of-the-art technology and easier maintenance.

The KC-390 Millennium flies faster and carries more cargo than other military cargo aircraft of the same size and is the ideal platform for all major usage scenarios. They require less inspection and maintenance, combined with highly reliable systems and components, which reduces aircraft ground time and overall operating costs, contributing to excellent levels of availability and low life-cycle cost.
