On July 1, 2016, Azul Linhas Aereas inaugurated operations to Montevideo, which represented the company’s arrival to a new South American market. Initially, flights were operated in ATR 72-600s to and from Porto Alegre, four times a week.
Due to high occupancy, the airline increased to daily flights in October, and to 8 weekly operations in November.
In December Azul introduced Embraer 190s for the first time on the route to Carrasco Airport, offering 48 more seats per flight. In July 2017, operations started to be carried out only with these aircraft.
On December 15, 2016, flights began to Punta del Este, its second destination in Uruguay. For the summer season, Azul Linhas Aéreas had operations from Campinas and Porto Alegre, two of its most important hubs in Brazil.
During 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 the airline also had seasonal flights to Punta del Este, from the previously mentioned airports.
Azul Linhas Aéreas will resume operations to Uruguay from November. This marks the company’s return to a South American market since March 2020, prior to the COVID-19 suspensions.
Montevideo will once again receive Azul flights from November 10, while Punta del Este will be from December 20.
On the other hand, Azul’s operations between Brazil and Uruguay will be carried out by modern Embraer E195-E2s, incorporated by the company since the end of 2019. These aircraft have never before been scheduled on Azul Linhas Aéreas’ international flights.
