Panama: passenger traffic at Tocumen airport grew 24% in May

-

The Tocumen International Airport in Panama managed to increase passenger traffic by 24% in May as a result of the increase in frequencies of many companies such as Copa Airlines and Iberia.

Although the impact of the pandemic by Covid-19 still shows its harsh consequences, in May 601,278 passengers were mobilized, 145,014 more than during the previous month  but still at levels close to 40% compared to the pre-pandemic ones.

Between January and May of this year, 2,348,464 passengers passed through Tocumen between national and international flights, which in cold numbers shows a considerable recovery since the pandemic began given that last year the volume of passengers transported had decreased by 90%.

Regarding cargo, 73,693 metric tons of merchandise and mail were moved, which means a growth of 31.28% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Respecting this important recovery, this is what Raffoul Arab Pinzón, general manager of Tocumen S.A., said: “Panama has comparative advantages that make it a unique connection point in the region, with the best recovery conditions for air operations and promotion of other activities such as tourism and the logistics conglomerate.”

The air terminal finished last month with a total of 17 commercial and 16 cargo airlines operating. They carried out a total of 26,987 air activities during the first 5 months of the year, which means an approximate number of 179 daily operations.

It is also worth noting that since the restart of commercial activity on October 12, 2020 until May of this year, the airport transported a total of 3,343,916 passengers.

On the other hand, the regional airports of Panamá Pacífico and Río Hato, recorded altogether a movement of 43,252 passengers transported on their domestic flights.
