Emirates celebrates one year operating its Boeing 777-300ERs on cargo flights

It has been a year since Emirates began operating its Boeing 777-300ERs on cargo flights. There are already 3,100 flights with load carried in passenger seats and overhead compartments, exceeding 11,000 tons.

Supplies of PPE (personal protective equipment) were the most common cargo carried throughout this time.

Emirates SkyCargo had to introduce a special cover for the passenger seats on its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in order to prevent accidental damage to the interior of the aircraft and to take care of the personal entertainment screens.

To safely place cargo on the seats and inside the overhead compartments of an airliner, the company had to quickly conduct a safety risk assessment and develop a set of processes and procedures to train both the team in Dubai and ground handling partners across the country. The team also developed an application with a smart calculator that allow teams to calculate the optimal load capacity within the aircraft cabin.

The procedures developed also specify the maximum weight and dimensions of individual packages, as well as the types of cargo they could allow inside the cabin and additional safety instructions. For example, all perishable cargo packaging for loading into seats and containers must include a suitable internal absorbent layer.

According to Emirates, its cargo division connects more than 135 cities on six continents.
