After the decision of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States to downgrade Mexico to Category 2 in terms of air safety, the National Air Transport Chamber, which brings together several of the main players in that market, issued a harsh statement assuring that «the consequences of the degradation to the aeronautical authority of Mexico are serious and imply an additional impact that will severely affect the recovery of national airlines and trade between both countries.»
From CANAERO they highlighted that Mexican airlines operate with the highest operational safety standards and international norms, for which they make «a call to the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC for its initials in Spanish) and the Federal Government» so that «they urgently take the technical, human and budgetary measures necessary to allow Category 1 to be recovered and thus reduce the serious impact on national industry, jobs and the contribution to Mexico’s GDP.»
The downgrade will not affect the current operations of Mexican airlines to the United States, but it prevents them from increasing routes or frequencies in the lucrative cross-border market, which adds a double impact in the process of recovery in the boreal summer season.
On the other hand, from Aeroméxico they issued a statement indicating precisely that operations to and from the United States will be carried out in the usual way, and that all tickets, reservations, electronic vouchers, Premier Points and loyalty program benefits will continue in force.
«For Aeroméxico, safety is our top priority and therefore we will continue to operate under the highest international standards. We are in the best position to support the aeronautical authorities of our country to recover Category 1 for the benefit of the industry,» they assured.
