On May 15, 2017, Avianca began its service between Bogotá and Montevideo on Airbus A319-100, with a capacity for 120 passengers. Less than two years later, more precisely on February 28, 2019, the Colombian airline canceled operations between both capitals, despite having a 85% load factor on the route. Avianca continued to operate in Montevideo, although only from Lima.
At the end of last year, the airline confirmed that it will close its international hub in Lima in order to continue with the development of its main hub in Bogotá. Therefore, all Avianca regional destinations from Peru were canceled, and transferred to El Dorado Airport. As of December 17, 2019, Avianca resumed its operations between Bogotá and Montevideo, with four weekly flights. Lima – Montevideo was suspended on January 15, 2020.
The flights between the capitals of Colombia and Uruguay were very busy, but were suspended on March 21, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to GDS data obtained by Aviacionline, Avianca will resume operations between Bogotá and Montevideo as of December 1. The flights will be carried out on Airbus A320-200s, with a capacity for 150 passengers.
